The bullpen was hardly the only reason the Rangers lost Sunday. There is a lot to talk about.
Texas Rangers pitcher Yerry Rodríguez walks around the mound after walking Houston Astros' Kyle Tucker to load the bases during the seventh inning of a baseball game Sunday, April 14, 2024, in Houston.left Minute Maid Park, they left behind a wake of spent champagne bottles, ski goggles and other assorted detritus from a celebration. And that was the Rangers’ best day of the three-game set. Yeah, hard as it is to believe, everything went downhill after that.
“He just lost the zone,” Bochy said. “We had some guys that needed a day off. Yerry was one who was here right now. But he is struggling a little bit. That’s why we are going to option him.” To be fair, the bullpen was hardly the only reason the Rangers lost Sunday. Eovaldi fell behind on the first at-bat of the bottom of the first when Altuve clubbed a pitch above the zone off the Chick-Fil-A Cow signage at the top of the left field foul pole. Two innings later, Altuve made it 2-0 when he hit a fat get-me-over fastball in a 3-0 count to nearly the exact same spot. Out of the zone; in the zone. It doesn’t matter to Altuve, especially with Eovaldi on the mound.
The other damage, though, was done by No. 9 hitter Mauricio Dubón, who lined a two-run double to right in the fourth. The Rangers had moved the outfield to shallow depth, but shaded Adolis García towards center. He went a long way to dive for the ball, but it hit off his glove. The whole rally had started when McCormick bounced a double that scooted just inside the third base line. It was not tremendously hard hit.
“Those are the tough ones, the frustrating ones,” Eovaldi said. “You have to make the bleeding stop. And I wasn’t able to do that. We’ve been having that one inning that’s kept us from going deep into games.”Could Texas Rangers’ first base slump impact Nathaniel Lowe’s rehab timeline?, Rangers beat writer/insider. Evan has covered the Rangers since 1997. He has twice been named one of the top 10 beat writers in the country by the AP Sports Editors.
