The Red Raiders open the 2024 season against an FCS opponent at Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday.
Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks runs for a first down against California during the second half half of the Independence Bowl NCAA college football game, Dec. 16, 2023, in Shreveport, La.Welcoming in a team two-and-a-half hours down Highway 84 in Abilene, a team that hasn’t been to Lubbock for a football meeting in 75 years, the Red Raiders look to get on the right foot to open the season.
Tech will likely establish the run with Tahj Brooks, who has hopes to break Tech’s all-time leading rushing record this season but will be going up against former Tech defensive coordinator Keith Patterson, who will bring his Odd-Stack 3-3-5 defense to Lubbock this weekend.. “We’re expecting an odd stack, you know, stuff like what TCU did the first two years, Sonny was there, what Iowa State does. It’s going to be interesting if they do play some four down.
Bowie has implemented an air-raid system, similar to what Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley has implemented for the Red Raiders over the past two seasons. “They do have a new OC, he was one of the best in the country, whenever you look at them last year, I think he was top 10 in passing and top 10 in passing touchdowns,” McGuire said. “If you look at them on offense, they’re really good offense, they’re big up front. You know, they’ve been able to move the ball, and they’ve got a lot of experience back, so that’s going to be a good test for us.
Texas Tech is 27-1 all time against FCS opponents with the lone loss coming against North Texas in 1988 and that trend must continue for the Red Raiders in the season opener. While Abilene Christian has plenty of Tech ties and will be a well-coached program under Patterson, the Red Raiders must take care of their business against the Wildcats this weekend.
