Thandie Newton says speaking out on sexual abuse stopped her from getting acting work

Thandie Newton admits that speaking out against sexual abuse in the movie industry cost her work, as she became the person ‘you didn’t want to hire’.

Since then, Thandie says she feels compelled to discuss sexual abuse and call it out, but in doing so it impacted on her career – with even her publicist at the time suggesting she wasn’t so vocal., the 46-year-old says there were instances where she wasn’t employed and other stars wouldn’t want to be associated with her.

She said: ‘I was very aware of the climate of sexual abuse that was going on around me, so I became the person you didn’t want to hire because I would call it out.‘In retrospect, I can see many instances where not only would I not be employed, but other actors and actresses would not necessarily want to be associated with me.’

‘I thought, “OK this is a little weird,” but there was a female casting director in the room and I’d done weird stuff before, so I did it.’
