It’s not often that an orchestra and a piece of music seem so indivisible. They played as if they owned every note of it – which, in a way, they do.
Next year, Sir Simon Rattle steps down as music director of the London Symphony Orchestra, so this was a musical farewell on a grand scale. While Handel is the poet of the human soul, Vivaldi is its painter and decorator, all musical gilding and trompe l’oeil – at least, that’s the contemporary consensus.
