Amazon shoppers have been snapping up a £14 gadget that creates a smart home on a budget, and helps to reduce energy bills by ensuring devices aren't using power when you're not using them.
There's a solution on the market in the form of the Tapo Smart Plug twin pack, which is currently on offer for £14.99, down from £19.99. Amazon also offers a four-pack for £25.99, down from £39.99. The Tapo Smart Plug gives you total control of electronics around the house, allowing you to turn devices connected to the smart plug on or off via your smartphone or with voice control.
The Tapo plugs also have an ‘Away Mode’ feature, which can be used to turn lights on and off to give the impression that someone is home when you’re out of the house. More than 5,000 customers have snapped one up in the past month to make it the best-selling product in Amazon’s Smart and Remote Controlled Plugs category.
Another said: “Brilliant, simple smart plug. Was looking for a smart system that was not going to break the bank and did not have any subscription. These seemed to fit the bill, and they do. Really simple to set up, plug into whatever you want to control using the app which is also well made, easy to use and hasn’t crashed yet. I plugged them into a number of lights around the home so that they could be turned on before coming home at night and getting up in the morning.
However, the same buyer pointed out that the Tapo smart plugs ‘only work on 2.4Ghz WiFi’. Shoppers should also note they do not support Apple Home, as one review noted: “The smart plug works well, but it doesn’t support Apple Home.
