Blackpool families torn apart in 2.6 seconds that killed two dads
He had made his way across the southbound lane of Queen's Promenade in Bispham and was looking towards his left at traffic heading towards Blackpool when Nigel Denley made the fateful decision to speed up to 52mph to overtake a row of traffic. The two men had never met but their lives were about to collide with catastrophic consequences.
Nigel had been thrown from his motorbike. He was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Infirmary but as resuscitation efforts continued doctors realised he had suffered a catalogue of life-threatening injuries including a lacerated liver, ruptured spleen and a brain injury which had already caused tissue to die. Nigel was pronounced dead less than two hours after the crash.
Neither men had any alcohol or drugs in their system and there was nothing else that had contributed to the crash. It was possible Bill, 44, had been listening to music through his earphones, and Nigel's phone was connected to a handsfree system, but Senior Coroner Alan Wilson was clear that there was only one reason why these two men died - excess speed.
Nigel, 52, was a heavy goods vehicle driver who clearly loved his motorbike. He had been on his way to a bike meet in Lytham when the crash happened.
