The stakes couldn’t be higher for this ultra-competitive class at next weekend’s race: “If you win Le Mans, all the people around the world know it,” says Ferrari’s endurance boss, Antonello Coletta.
Last year a crowd of 325,000 lined the 13.6-kilometre road circuit in north-west France to watch the 100th running and, in remarkable symmetry, Ferrari’s triumphant return after a 50-year absence.On June 15-16 this year, a trio of Ferraris will attempt to repeat their 2023 victory, but they will battle no fewer than 20 other “Hypercars” seeking outright victory.
Antonello Coletta, Ferrari’s global head of endurance, explains the ways in which “the discipline of endurance is completely different to sprint racing”.“The discipline of endurance is completely different to sprint racing,” he says. “We need to be very fast, very consistent and to have a good reliability in all conditions: hot, cold, wet.
“Endurance racing is the DNA of a Ferrari, and is a good base to learn and to put some technical parts on the race car, and vice versa because the base of the engine of the 499P is the six-cylinder of our road cars … the architecture is exactly the same. We learn a lot … and we can put some experience in the road cars.”
