The 1980s were marked by significant changes, with right-wing conservatism and free market economics taking center stage. This period also witnessed the advent of personal computers, compact discs, and camcorders. The decade saw the emergence of the first cases of AIDS. Against a backdrop of race riots, strikes, mass unemployment, and gentrification, Tate Britain is presenting a new exhibition titled 'The 80s: Photographing Britain'.
The exhibition features nearly 350 images and archive materials, illustrating how photography served as a means for social representation, cultural celebration, and artistic expression throughout the 1980s. Among the showcased works are images by Anna Fox capturing corporate excess, Martin Parr’s vibrant depictions of everyday life, Markéta Luskačová and Don McCullin’s portraits of street life, and Sunil Gupta’s series 'Pretended Family Relationships', which gave voice to underrepresented groups, including multicultural and queer communities, as well as women in photography. The exhibition also addresses the controversial Section 28, a law passed in 1988 that prohibited councils and schools from promoting the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship
