I must admit to quickly wiping away a tear, thinking of my own dad and my introduction to the beautiful game. . Saturdays and Sundays, from the age of I cant remember when, me, and a bunch of other offspring, would go with our dads to cricket played in glamorous arenas like Sileby, Mountsorrel, Heather, Ibstock, Cropston.
School holidays were spent glued to the BBC and Jim Laker’s sparse commentary , or the lyrical John Arlott on Test Match Special. Or better still, TV pictures with radio commentary. In the red hot summer of 76 I spent most days watering the square to my dads instructions as he worked in one of the local factories.
