He left at 4:30am and as he was walking to his car, he was assaulted by four men wearing masks and armed with knives. As well as having his watch stolen, he was stabbed multiple times in the buttocks, left leg, chest and head.
“The muscle was almost hanging out of the wound,” he says. “And I made a rookie mistake because I tried to push the muscle back in. That’s when I started to go dizzy.”Remarkably, he was back on the pitch three months later, but he was never quite the same player. The following July, he found himself without a club after leaving Derby – an exile that ultimately lasted two years before he signed this summer with Warrington Town, who play in the sixth tier of English football.
