The basic first aid all parents need to know – from febrile seizures to accidental poisoning
Energetic and growing young children are often falling over or bumping their heads.
The most important thing to do is cool the burn under cold running water for at least 20 minutes – this will reduce their pain, swelling and the risk of scarring. It is likely that this will clear the blockage. If not, turn the baby over and give up to five chest thrusts. As febrile seizures are caused by a raised temperature, take off their outer clothing to help cool them and open windows and doors.
This is a life-threatening situation – but you can help them. The first thing you need to do is shout for help. Your baby’s chest should rise visibly as you blow and fall fully when you lift your mouth. Each complete rescue breath should take one second.
