We can’t guarantee snow this Christmas but we can guarantee some of the finest scenery in God’s Own Country.
While sheltered for the first section and fairly short, the footpath is steep and muddy with plenty of steps. Therefore it’s not suitable for people with mobility issues. The Saddleworth side from Diggle to the historic West Riding/Lancashire boundary near Mossley is equally scenic. There is no pedestrian access to the tunnel. Instead take the A62 from Marsden over the top to Diggle. Like all canal walks it’s fairly flat.
These days you’re far more likely to see waterfowl – rather than Lancaster Bombers – buzzing this reservoir on the Yorkshire/Derbyshire boundary. At the top of the Peak District it’s about as scenic as it gets with woods and a mighty dam with crenelated service towers. That’s not to mention the spectacular view across Derwent Valley.
Wentworth Castle Gardens A spectacular gardens with a spectacular fake castle ruin designed by a spectacularly silly man. Spectacular – well, impressive – views of half of South Yorkshire and beyond abound from the top of the tower. Did we say it was ‘spectacular’? Hannah’s Meadows This walk, near the top of Baldersdale, passes through the former farm of legendary Daleswoman Hannah Hauxwell . This far corner of the old North Riding is remote, wild and beautifully bleak with windswept meadows, bare fells, reservoir and stony becks.
