AFL chairman Richard Goyder is primed for a record-breaking opening for the AFL season, despite mounting questions.

Public ticketing for the Richmond versus Carlton opening blockbuster has sold out with a crowd of over 90,000 expected at the MCG with more than 355,000 fans expected to attend round one of the season.

“There was still a fair bit of hesitancy last year ... this year it is full throttle with the footy back,” Mr Goyder said. “I don’t subscribe to [premiership] windows, you just develop the best and most competitive list you can, it didn’t stop Geelong winning last year, they were clearly the best side in it and the oldest list in history,” he said.“We’ve topped up our list with a couple of elite players in areas where we’ve been challenged, Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper will be really important.”

Mr Sayers also made the bold prediction that with some long-awaited success, Carlton will rise to become the biggest club in the league.
