Some exciting plans on the way!
Arguably the two biggest planning debates sparking discussions in Lancaster and Morecambe are the seemingly endless influx of new housing developments for South Lancaster and the Eden Project North.
In 2021 the South Lancaster Housing Infrastructure Fund was agreed between the city council, Lancashire County Council and government’s Homes England agency. The agreement would unlock government investment worth £140m and support the construction of 9,000 new homes to the south of the city as well as new roads including a remodelling of Junction 33 of the M6.
A previous application to build 92 homes on the same site, dating back to 2000, was refused permission on the basis that there was no justification to allow for the houses to be built. The fact that, 23 years later, a fresh application has been submitted to build an even bigger housing development, with the confidence of a major construction firm, shows how far Lancaster has come during the last two decades.
Plans were unveiled in 2022 to extend Lancaster Grand Theatre which is said to be the third oldest theatre in the country outside of London. The plans, set to be decided this week and which have been recommended for approval, include work to develop a new two-storey extension and foyer at St Leonard’s Gate.
