In the latest episode of Esquire Freeze Frame, we sat down with 'The Bikeriders' writer-director Jeff Nichols and the film's resident kingpin, Tom Hardy, to discuss the critically acclaimed film and delve into some pivotal scenes.
Back in 1967, a photojournalist named Danny Lyon embedded himself within the notorious Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, resulting in a cult book about the burgeoning subculture called The Bikeriders. Almost 60 years later, that photobook, which captured life on the road – along with the relationships and in-fighting of the people at the heart of it – has been turned into a film of the same name by writer-director Jeff Nichols, starring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Mike Faist and Jodie Comer.
In the latest edition of Esquire’s Freeze Frame, we asked Tom, who plays the fictionalised gang leader Johnny, and Jeff to break down a couple of key scenes from the movie, which looks set to dominate cinemas this summer.Discussing a “very intimate scene” between Hardy and Butler, who plays Benny – a younger biker who finds himself pulled in opposite directions by his girlfriend, Kathy and Johnny – Nichols describes how the scene came to life “in a way I didn’t see on the page”.
