It is finally official: Australia is experiencing its first El Niño event in eight years.
Climatologists, and eager weather watchers have been scrutinising the Pacific Ocean for months on end trying to find signs of a fully-fledged El Niño event.
Most of Australia is set to swelter through significantly warmer than average temperatures in the final months of 2023. Picture: Sky News AustraliaThroughout the rest of this year we will continue to see rounds of heat challenging and surpassing records in different parts of the country. But if the first wave of the monsoon fails to materialise then we are likely to continue seeing rounds of record-challenging heat. We are already feeling the influence of our two climate drivers – with drier than usual weather dominant across most of Australia. Sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean have now risen enough for the Bureau of Meteorology to declare an El Nino this week.
The combination of drier than usual weather and frequent rounds of heat will cause evaporation rates to reach record levels in many areas.
