Clubs will blast Black music, but turn people away for looking too ‘urban’.

Rohini Kahrs, a representative from race equality think-tank, Runnymede Trust, explains how “Light-skinned and mixed-race people have easier times getting past doormen than their darker friends based on Eurocentric conceptions of ‘beauty’. Clubs want to make money and attract clientele who will spend a lot. The assumption is that having ‘attractive’ women in the club — i.e. women with white features — is the way to do this.

This double standard sneaks past bouncers and doormen, seeping through the front doors of clubs and onto their dance floors. One 24-year-old co-founder of anti-racist student organisation, BlackEd, who wishes to remain anonymous, recalls working behind the bar of a predominantly white club in, “white DJs would play songs with the N-word, which gives white and non-Black people the opportunity to use it.” Relentlessly played on every shift, she found Chris Brown’s Freaky Friday especially wearing.

The assumption is that having ‘attractive’ women in the club — i.e. women with white features — is the way to do this.
