Taking its passengers gently away from the crowds of Croatia's busier islands, this small-scale cruise visits quiet parts of the country where tourists are few and far between“Dolphins!” We couldn’t believe our eyes as we saw two sets of fins break the water’s surface in front of our catamaran as we sailed up’s Krka River north of Šibenik.
While the weather was still calm, Mislav steered us towards uninhabited Kakan, one of the dozens of islands in the Šibenik archipelago, for a swim stop. It’s hard to beat the sheer joy of jumping into the Adriatic on a hot day and feeling the salt on your skin as you dry off.The wind was picking up, though, so we sailed through the sheltered St Anthony’s Channel to the mouth of the Krka River.
We were discovering the advantages of a sailing holiday in a small craft – especially one that didn’t come with the hefty price tag of a privately chartered yacht. This trip worked out at less than £120pp per day. I had done a Croatian cruise on a 36-passenger boat, but here on our four-cabin catamaran we could meander a bit more and take the routes less travelled. After our quick stop in Šibenik, we sailed towards the small island of Prvić close to the mainland.
The heavens had opened as we sat in the cosy covered terrace ecstatically devouring the tenderest meat imaginable and drinking carafes of rough red wine and, when that ran out, walnut brandy.I knew I had to come back and spend more time here. The same went for its neighbouring island and our mooring for the night, Zlarin, another wonderfully sleepy place where, like Prvić, cars are banned.
