Ryan is looking angry as he is with Grace in The Boy season 4 finale
Summary The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke shares that he had to direct parts of the season 4 finale from home after testing positive for COVID-19. This was the first episode Kripke directed since the season 1 finale, "You Found Me." Both episodes proved to be pivotal turning points in the series, with the season 1 finale revealing that Becca Butcher was alive and has a son, and the season 4 finale culminating in Homelander assuming control of the United States of America.
With Homelander now President of the United States in all but name thanks to Sage's plan, Butcher now a supe and full-on villain, and the Boys at their lowest point yet, the series' status quo has been upended. There is more narrative weight behind these shifts with the knowledge that season 5 is the end of the series and will be the last opportunity for the Boys to save the world from Homelander. This is a far better approach than simply continuing the show as long as it is popular.
1 Kripke has an intimate understanding of the characters and the world he has brought to life. Even in the series' most shocking moments, these developments feel earned and consistent with the series because of the narrative groundwork leading up to them. This will continue with Kripke getting to complete his vision and The Boys season 5 likely coming to a satisfying conclusion as the Boys get their last shot to take down Homelander at the height of his power.
