The UK’s rice-milling sector has already been dented by Brexit, losing nearly half of its exports to the EU since the UK left the single market two years ago.
Many are in Tory-held seats, including Selby, in North Yorkshire, Worksop, in Nottinghamshire, West Bromwich, in the West Midlands, Harwich, in Essex, Rochester, in Kent, and Felixstowe, in Suffolk – the constituency of Thérèse Coffey, the environment secretary. Dominic Goudie, its head of international trade, predicted UK shoppers would also end up paying more, because domestic stocks that guard against “price volatility” would be lost.
“As part of our drive as a truly Global Britain, it’s vital we strive to remove the barriers our exporters face, but – as with any trade deal – I’m sure it will also need to be carefully crafted to make sure British industry and jobs are also protected.”
