Brides are ditching tradition and taking “fashion risks” in dramatic, red-carpet-worthy dresses.
April 23, 2024 at 6:00 a.m. EDT“I had this idea of doing something ‘Disney villain on the beach’ in black,” said the sous-chef, who works at San Francisco’s Michelin-starred State Bird Provisions. “I wanted it to be something that felt like me.”On her big day, Curran swagged a dip-dyed silk georgette gown with a detachable 13-foot cape by Paul Burgo of Factory New York. Fading from onyx to alabaster, the bespoke creation was darkly dramatic.
In recent months, her clients have sent her inspo pics of “Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer in a custom blush Prada column and Keri Russell in a fringed bone-and-white Jil Sander tank dress at the Golden Globes. “Emily in Paris” lead Lily Collins in a Tamara Ralph Couture black velvet gown festooned with silver roses and white taffeta rosette sleeves at the BAFTA Awards was another.
Marisa Ferguson, née Muma, knew from the moment she saw Jessica Biel’s floaty pink Giambattista Valli wedding dress on the cover of a 2012 issue of People magazine that she wanted a pink gown. Lhuillier made her custom off-the-shoulder ball gown with a cathedral-length train in the same material. The wedding took place last June on Hilton Head Island, where the couple first met when they were 17.
While bridal attire in China, India and other countries is typically red, signifying good luck and happiness, shades of white have long been the norm in Western cultures. The custom dates back to 1840, when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in what she described in her journal as “a white satin dress, with a deep flounce of Honiton lace.” The royal wedding was publicized around the world, and white gowns representing innocence and romance became the norm.
The hunt for glamour during the pandemic also made couples resourceful. “During the lockdown, a lot of brides couldn’t get access to the regular boutiques. And in certain instances their dresses were stuck at factories or department stores, and they had to come up with a Plan B and think outside of the box,” said Choi, who lends an “editorial eye” to every job.She also pointed out that older brides — U.S. Census data shows the estimated median age of a first-time bride is 28.
