Prince Edward County has become a hotspot of ex-Toronto residents, with some opening hip hotels, bars and vineyards

For foreigners, it’s all too easily confused with Prince Edward Island, 930 miles to the west, whereI started on a bit of an “Anne with an E” pilgrimage until someone put me right. “The County” or PEC, is not a place of puffed sleeves and tea parties. It’s a weekender’s drive fromto the west and Montreal to the east.

That may explain why most of the people I met in PEC came from Toronto – and never went back., but plenty of couples with and without young families. There’s time for lunch up the road at the Inn, an optical illusion of a place where a smaller lake, formed by a sinkhole, sits several metres higher than the inland sea of Lake Toronto.
