It is all starting to look a bit Alan Bennett
Britain has long leaned on the achievements of our wartime generations, invoking their tenacity, resilience and stoicism. To some Brits, the Tommies and the hardy survivors of the Blitz represent the country we’ve lost, the country we could have been.
With Matt Hancock on television almost 24/7, Britain needed an inspiring figurehead, and who better than a product of that much-beloved, but dwindling generation? That’s because, two years after his death, the Captain Tom Foundation – set up in his honour – is swimming in murky waters. To some corners of the populace, this has all been a certain vindication, and a cause for celebration. Because for all those that donated to the foundation, bought gin, shed a tear when Moore’s image appeared in the sky in the 2020 lockdown fireworks display, there were as many that wanted to see it all come crashing down.
