The sheer scale of the turnover of MPs will create huge logistical problems
The remarkable thing about Parliament is its amazing capacity to deliver radical upheaval and institutional continuity at the same time. Every election, its composition changes – sometimes gradually, sometimes drastically.
The other parliamentary parties tell the same story, with the most parliamentarians having arrived in the green benches in the past 15 years. Against that background of churn, the Commons will soon go through a seismic upheaval in its composition. Even before the election began, numerous Conservative MPs opted to stand down, including some of the 2019ers. If the polls are anything like correct, the electorate will double down on that,.
Our Parliament has seen the formation of parties in the first place, and centuries of changes in their disposition – from an era of Whigs facing off against Tories, via Liberals versus Conservatives – to the split in Liberalism and the development of the Conservative and Unionist Party, the rise of Labour, the “strange death of Liberal England”, the post-war duopoly, the SDP-Liberal Alliance and Liberal Democrats, the SNP surge, the near-collapse and now resurgence of Labour.
Starmer only had 205 MPs when the election was called; some of those are standing down, and of the others who get re-elected, some either aren’t interested in ministerial office or wouldn’t be deemed suitable for it by their party’s leader.
