Since buying Twitter, Elon Musk has been attempting to pivot the company away from reliance on advertising to generating revenue via Twitter Blue, promising to unveil a number of new features – many of which are still yet to be delivered.
As ad revenue sinks and Twitter Blue revenue fails to take off, Mr Musk – who secured billions in equity and debt financing to fund his acquisition of Twitter – has suggested the company is losing large amounts of money.Mr Musk appears to have concerns about the cost of maintaining the SMS service, which sees Twitter pay millions of dollars in order to send texts containing login codes to users.
Replying to a tweet that claimed such “scams” were costing Twitter $60 million a year, Mr Musk replied “yup”. There is no public evidence of any such operation.The site says: “Non-Twitter Blue subscribers that are already enrolled will have 30 days to disable this method and enrol in another. Only a minority of Twitter users employ any form of 2FA, but of those, text-based 2FA is overwhelmingly the most popular option as it only requires a phone and does not need a dedicated app.
