Ideal for anyone who wants to get into the festive spirit without any cheesiness
With Storm Bert battering Nottinghamshire we were afraid we'd be flooded out rather than Snowed In as we set off to visit this year's Christmas attraction at Newstead Abbey . Although we've walked round the gardens we've never been inside the ancestral pile of Romantic poet Lord Byron at any time of the year, let alone the festive season.
The creative minds behind the display have gone down a slightly different route, swapping fairytales for a unique story based on true events - the time 25-year-old Byron and his half-sister Augusta got snowed in at Newstead during the Great Frost of 1814 when the whole country was covered in three feet of snow.
Throughout the wintery tale, entwined with history, we encounter Byron's possessions and and memorabilia dedicated to the bad boy of poetry. Alongside portraits of him and his mother hangs a painting of his Elizabethan ancestor Little Sir John with the Great Beard which according to legend haunted the abbey. It was lost for 160 years but returned to its rightful place back at Newstead in 2015.
A single Christmas tree stands in Byron's study - the secluded spot looking out over the Spanish Garden and the tomb of his beloved dog Boatswain, is where he used to write poems and letters to his friends and admirers.
