I’ve seen the most corrosive, soul-obliterating aspects of bullying around me; but I have not read them in Adam Tolley’s report today ✒️ EliotWilson2 for ipaperviews
Dominic Raab has resigned from government in the wake of bullying allegations
In an immediate sense, Dominic Raab engineered his own fall from ministerial grace. In February, he had pledged to Sky News’s Sophy Ridge that he would resign from the cabinet “if an allegation of bullying is upheld”. But his resignation letter,, makes it clear that he has only done so in order to honour that pledge. It describes the investigative process as “flawed” and argues that the inquiry into his conduct has “set a dangerous precedent for the conduct of good government”.
But that is sufficient. Although Tolley does not find use for the word “bullying”, Raab clearly behaved poorly on more than one occasion and it is. His departure from the cabinet, very possibly for good, seems a weighty penalty. Our political institutions must be like Caesar’s wife when it comes to bullying and harassment in the workplace. I spent more than a decade working in the House of Commons, and in times of extreme pressure saw MPs behave badly. Sometimes this was a momentary outburst of temper; but some people very close to me left brilliant careers because of systemic abuse.
No one within a square mile of Westminster will swoon in shock at the notion that Dominic Raab is a difficult man to work for. He is determined and certain of his views, direct to the point of brusque in manner, impatient of bureaucracy and rates his own intelligence, which is not negligible, even more highly than he should.
