More than half of self-described strong Republicans think civil war in the US is likely. Some are taking matters into their own hands
Ron Hubbard began making disaster bunkers in 2011 – and says he believes the US is on the brink of civil war. . He believes the US will splinter into a bloody conflict between Democrats and Republicans – and that the upcoming presidential election will spark it off.
“Then they’ll probably break him out of jail, and he’ll lead a revolution in America. One hundred per cent of the future of America depends on this one election.” And some fear that this election – which has been characterised by hostility and seen two attempted assassinations – will be even worse.
During the presidential debate, she said Trump had encouraged “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War” and highlightedrule as an authoritarian, saying: “There’s a level of passion that I’ve never seen, there’s a level of hatred that I’ve never seen, and that’s probably a bad combination.”There is a sliding scale in the prepping community, from “putting a first aid kit to their car to building a multi million dollar bunker down in Hawaii, like Mark Zuckerberg did.
But he has seen decreasing interest in community security – such as making an emergency plan with neighbours – and growing focus on protection for individual homes and families.“What people are buying indicates that they’re planning on looking out for themselves,” he says.
“They’re not really looking at gardening and sustainability and homesteading, which is kind of still under the broad scope of prepping. A lot of long time preppers, they get to that point where they want to be self sufficient. I think the newer ones are looking for quick wins. What can they get done within the next few months?”At the extreme end of prepping are Mr Hubbard’s bunkers, which begin at $20,000 and work their way up into the millions.
