A man whose property is teetering on a cliff edge says he is one-and-a-half metres from needing to abandon his home ‘Where can I go? I get nothing from selling this property. We own this property, why would we want to go and rent somewhere?’

Peter Garforth and his wife, Sheila, bought a two-bedroom cottage in 2000 in Green Lane in, East Yorkshire. At the time, Mr Garforth knew the coastline was eroding, but says he was told by an official in the East Riding of Yorkshire council planning department that he would have about 50 to 70 years in the property before the cliff eroded.

He estimated then that he had about 160 feet between the cliff, a council road and his garden, although no exact measurements were done. In 2005 he started to become alarmed at the rate of erosion, and measured the cliff to find that about 19 or 20 feet had been lost.“I can see the cliff edge – the cliff edge is my garden,” Mr Garforth toldHe said he has been told that when that reduces to 13.36 metres – he will be served an eviction notice by the council for safety reasons, although he cannot predict when this will be. “It’s like how long is a piece of string? No one knows, that’s the problem.

While the area has always been eroded by the sea due to the soft boulder clay of the cliffs, Mr Garforth said he thought the rate of erosion has accelerated beyond what was expected due to a higher frequency of storms, sea-level rise andBetween 2005 and 2010 there were several serious storms which impacted the cliff, he said.
