Unveiled back in 1995, the ambitious blueprint, dubbed the X-Seed 4000, would effortlessly seize the mantle as the loftiest skyscraper ever erected. The proposal calls for a breathtaking height of 4 km , reaching nearly half the elevation of Mount Everest. Japanese construction powerhouse Taisei Corporation, the firm behind the scheme, reportedly pictured it rising from Tokyo Bay, though other Asian locations were floated as possible candidates.
This extraordinarily audacious proposal suggested accommodating between 500,000 and one million people throughout its 800 storeys. Roughly 3,000,000 tons of steel would have been necessary for the colossal project, with internal air pressure mechanisms were proposed to combat altitude-induced health complications for those living inside, reports the Express. The floating metropolis, spanning 6 km in width, recently sparked discussion on LinkedIn, where Reuben Petty shed light on the unrealised vision.
He noted: "Its form was inspired by Mount Fuji, featuring a broad, stable base gradually tapering to a majestic peak. This pyramidal shape was not purely aesthetic; it was intended to provide structural stability against the forces of the ocean and potential seismic activity, a significant concern in the Tokyo Bay area.
"Rather than simply housing flats, the ambitious blueprint called for it to function as a complete city in its own right, with business hubs, shopping districts, leisure facilities and research centres all housed within. Speculation emerged in 2007 that Taisei was planning to proceed with the daring scheme, but these reports were quickly dismissed. George Blinder, managing director of Buildings and Data, revealed at the time: "It was never meant to be built.
The purpose of the plan was to earn some recognition for the firm, and it worked.
" Confirming the skyscraper had been shelved, Shohei Ogawa, a planning manager at Taisei, said X-Seed 4000 was "on the shelf now". He added: "It was our dream proposal for the technological advances we thought could happen in the future.
"that constructing such a colossal structure was "possible" from an engineering perspective. Yet from a realistic standpoint, he believed the projected $1 trillion price tag would be insurmountable, alongside securing approval to erect such a massive building. He added: "Tall buildings create a downdraft at their bases, and cast long shadows.
"Concepts for the ambitious projectOne user drew parallels with a video game, remarking: "This literally looks like the city seen in High Charity mission in Halo 2. " Another compared it to a blockbuster film, observing: "That's genuinely just the star harvester from Transformers 2. "A third questioned its practicality, noting: "Imagine the elevator not working and you live on the 657th floor.
" Meanwhile, one person challenged the logic behind the project, commenting: "Ah yes, let's waste resources to build some massive building. "
