Internet access is essential for most modern workplaces but also opens up potential distractions and security risks. Many employers implement web filtering to block certain websites deemed unproductive or inappropriate for the workplace.

The same study found that IT professionals estimate that 58% of employees spend over four hours per week on nonwork sites without filtering. Another 26% spend more than seven hours weekly on personal browsing. This equates to full-time staff squandering 26 paid days annually, through browsing unrelated to their job duties.

Beyond security, allowing unrestricted internet access opens the door to legal liabilities if employees access inappropriate or illegal online content from company devices. This could include violations of regulations, harassment issues from explicit material, or corporate data exfiltrated through peer-to-peer file-sharing services.

Maintaining this middle ground is key for maximizing the internet’s business utility while safeguarding critical assets. Filtering that cuts off access to essential work resources such as research materials or blocks specific website categories like social media can frustrate employees and disrupt workflows.
