in the upcoming fifth season. Netflix's returning historical drama is as visually impressive as its four previous seasons have led us to expect, but the cast has undergone a complete overhaul in order to facilitate the show's time jump.
It is not long into the season before we are given our first proper look at the '90s silhouettes of Princess Diana and Prince Charles ; two casting decisions that were always going to define the success of the season. They do not disappoint. Building on the solid foundation already laid by Emma Corrin in season four, Debicki shines particularly brightly. She commands each and every scene, imitating her subject with quite often eerie accuracy and bringing a charisma only fitting for the People's Princess.
It was true that there was also a tonal shift from season two to season three, when Olivia Colman took the 'reigns'. Viewers had to adjust to a monarch who was more deeply embedded in the stuffiness of the establishment, having lost that twinkle and naivety that made for a more relatable protagonist.
Colman's Queen was based not on the history books or archival material, however, but on her predecessor Claire Foy's portrayal. This allowed for a sense of
