Building a city is easy. Naming the places: that's another matter entirely. Nottingham, with a population of more than 300,000 people in its boundary, is one of the larger cities in the UK and is thus split into a variety of areas, each with their own history - and in many cases, unique name. We've looked at the history of some of those names in the past. But today, we thought we'd cover the ones we've not delved into the origins of before in so much detail.

Aspley Aspley was called Aspeleia in 1108. Its name refers to a clearing of Aspen trees. Cinderhill Originally two words as recently as 1775, Cinderhill was called so because lime kilns used for burning limestone were located near to where the Colliers Arms later stood (now where the Phoenix Park tramstop is). Lime kilns, used to burn limestone to make quicklime, would leave cinders of hot coal or wood once the process was complete. The lime kilns were located where they were because of their proximity to a quarry - now Quarry Holes nature reserve in the suburb. Basford Why do we pronounce Basford as 'Baseford', when there is no 'e' at the end? Well, here's why. The spelling of the name has gone through a variety of iterations over the centuries, being called 'Basseford', 'Bassefurthe', 'Besseford' and 'Basfard' at points. But it was also called Baceford, Baseford and Basefort - giving rise to the most modern version of its name. It comes from originally being called 'Basa's ford' - probably alluding to the fish that swam in the River Leen in centuries gone by. Top Valley North-of-the-city suburbs like Top Valley - but also Rise Park and Southglade - took their names from farms.
