All eyes turn to Milwaukee for the Republican convention

Former US President Donald Trump leaves after speaking at a campaign rally at the Trump National Doral Golf Club on July 09, 2024 in Doral, Florida. Trump continues to campaign across the country. SEATTLE – On the eve the Republican Party convention, its presumptive presidential candidate has taken hold of the party of Abraham Lincoln and – experts say – shaped it into an organisation that suits the interests of one man only: Donald J Trump.

Now they’re gone, replaced only by Trump and the Maga-styled platform he approved, a Republican National Committee co-chaired by his daughter-in-law and Republicans on Capitol Hill who have repeatedly backed and enabled him, despite the riot of 6 January, despite the multiple legal charges, and despite polls showing 70 per cent of Americans would prefer to avoid a rematch between Trump and Biden.

There are 20 simplistic slogans, as if lifted from a rally, all in capital letters, including: SEAL THE BORDER, AND STOP THE MIGRANT INVASION, CARRY OUT THE LARGEST DEPORTATION OPERATION IN AMERICAN HISTORY, END INFLATION, AND MAKE AMERICA AFFORDABLE AGAIN, MAKE AMERICA THE DOMINANT ENERGY PRODUCER IN THE WORLD, BY FAR!

Professor Hans Noel, a political scientist at Georgetown University, says presidential nominees are usually the focus of their party’s messaging. On the issue of abortion, Trump is aware one of the reasons Democrats did better than expected in the 2022 midterm elections is that after the scrapping of Roe v Wade and the ending of the constitution right to abortion, the issue of women’s rights has been a major energisers for Democratic voters.

Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor who ran a spirited fight against Trump in the primaries, is not attending even though she has said she is voting for him and told the delegates she amassed to do the same.
