Over half a century, the Darwin Rocksitters have seen romances blossom, shared a drink with Jimmy Barnes and set an incredible world record. This is how it all began.

On a sunny Saturday in 1974, a few mates with their rods and eskies filled with beer found a flat rock to cast a line off the jagged East Point cliffs that fringe Darwin's westernmost point."We didn't catch any fish," Beat Erismann recalls.

"Everyone thought, isn't this fantastic? You know, sitting on a rock, having a beer, watching the sun go down," Mr Erismann says.Speaking to the ABC on the club's 50th anniversary, Mr Erismann recalls a very different time in 1974."We had to our own fun, and we preferred to go down to the beach to the rock to have a beer rather than to the pub."

"In 1977, a radio station from New Zealand rang me and said… we heard about you and we want to challenge you in a rock sit," Mr Erismann says.Picture an unruly group of tanned Territorians gathered on a rock, surrounded by eskies, the NT flag and choppy ocean water — meet the Rocksitters. Rules one, three, five, seven and 12 established "no funny business on the Rock", and rule 15 ordered that "entrants must enjoy themselves".On Saturday, John Finlay was among more than 50 people who gathered at the rock to celebrate the club's 50th anniversary.
