Man Utd will again pay tribute to the great Sir Bobby Charlton this weekend when they face Manchester City at Old Trafford.
When Sir Bobby Charlton took in the scene at Old Trafford on April 3, 2016, he turned to his great friend and former teammate Alex Stepney and whispered, "I don't deserve this."
Stepney, who joined United in 1966 and spent seven years as a teammate of Charlton's, believes his friend was aware of just how significant a figure he was in English football, but that his modesty prevented him from getting carried away with it. The commemorations will continue ahead of the Manchester derby this weekend when a minute's applause in celebration of Charlton will be held before kick-off.
He was a significant support for Sir Alex Ferguson in the Scot's difficult early years and played a major role in the growth of United and their home. "It’s very difficult when you play and you travel and go on tour all around the world and you’re with the same guys all the time, but he enjoyed having fun with us," he said.
Charlton only told Stepney that he thought about those who had died in February 1958 constantly, which made it fitting that Charlton was United's captain and goalscorer when they beat Benfica 4-2 after extra-time at Wembley 10 years later to win the European Cup.
