Holidaymakers have been stuck with long delays both to and from the UK. Below, we explain your rights
If you’re flying from a UK or EU airport, or if your airline is UK or EU based, then depending on the reason for your cancellation or delay, you could be entitled to a refund. You have the option to receive the refund either in cash or as a voucher that you can redeem against a future booking.
If the delay leads to your holiday being cancelled, or new arrangements are made that result in a significant change to your holiday, then your travel company must offer an alternative holiday if they can, or a refund of the full package price, not just the flight part. Generally, a change of more than 12 hours on a 14-night holiday is considered a significant change.This depends on what caused the delay – if it wasn’t the airline’s fault, you won’t be entitled to receive any compensation.
Claims can typically be submitted online or via mail. It is crucial to direct your claim to the airline you flew with rather than the one through which you made the booking. For instance, if you had a British Airways booking but ended up flying with its partner, American Airlines, your claim should be directed to American Airlines.Most travel insurance policies will kick in if your transport is delayed for more than 12 hours. However, it will depend on your policy.
