Tim Walz has added a pinch of humour to Kamala Harris's pitch

The process has had a rigour befitting Harris’s background as a prosecutor, in this case looking for the figure who can best take down

Walz prevailed, because his affable Midwestern “dad charm” conceals an ability to cosh Republican opponents with the authority of a teacher and football coach while he also has a reputation as a well-liked figure among fellow governors inIt was however the “weird” factor which edged him over the line – a rare example of a single word, smartly applied, which has secured a 60-yea-old state-level politician without a high national profile the prize of potentially being the next vice president,...

“Listen to the guy,” Walz said. “He’s talking about Hannibal Lecter and shocking sharks or whatever crazy thing that just popped into his mind. We give him too much credit. Let’s ratchet down the scariness and name it what it is.” Namely, weird. His final rival in the race was Josh Shapiro, a battle-hardened candidate from Pennsylvania, who could claim an even more remarkable win in the battle for the heartlands than Walz.

His one main area of vulnerability is his response to the murder of George Floyd, and ensuing riots in the Twin Cities, which brought accusations of a chaotic or belated response from one quarter – and conversely, that he had not been quick enough to align with the burgeoning Black Lives Matter movement from those on the left of the party.

The party will hope to turn Walz’s message from Minnesota into a powerful defence against the doleful “American carnage” narrative of Trump-Vance, and demonstrate that progressive government can work in practice. That means citing abortion rights and the school meals plan as signs that Democrats can deliver in practice to improve the lives of ordinary people.
