Both political tribes love vaunting fame, glitz and success as part of their brands
In a country that prides itself on escaping the social strictures of pre-independence, British-dominated America, the Democratic Convention is proving itself fixated on class. When I asked Tammy Duckworth, a popular Illinois senator, what the recipe forwinning in 2024 should look like, she replied that appealing to the “middle class” would provide the route to the White House and give the party the two terms in power it longs for.
It is true that American academia in the 70s was not the high-paying career it has become. Yet while Harris grew up in modestly pleasant circumstances in suburban Oakland, she had a background of assurance and relatively high status. This is all blended out of the new narrative of striving for upward mobility.
But the convention is also an illustration of wild inconsistencies in the way the Democrats regard class and money. The elite political class of both parties has become extremely rich and immersed in rich-world networks, and Chicago this week has hosted a procession of glossy ultra-high-net-worth individuals.
