New York–based designer Claire Sullivan started at Vaquera. Now she's making custom pieces for celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Chloë Sevigny.
When I meet designer Claire Sullivan for coffee in Brooklyn during a downpour, I am fully expecting her to be wearing a tutu, as she often does on her Instagram. When you expect someone to show up to a meeting in a tutu, and then they don’t, you might be disappointed. But I am not. That’s because Sullivan is wearing a voluminous hoodie tucked under a particularly puffed-out puffer jacket.
She has developed a signature look so commodious, it is somehow slinky. Swaths of fabric are draped around shoulders and hips and even wrists in a way that makes them appear to almost fall off, revealing skin in a way that’s timid and tender, like a tease. There’s a doll-like touch to what she does that makes everything feel exaggerated and funny.
