After leaving London for a bigger house, a woman reflects on the vibrant, accessible life she misses in Dulwich.
After 10 years of living in the capital, Georgina Fuller moved away to afford a bigger house. But she hankers for the accessibility, anonymity and fun that city living broughtWalking past the vibrant mural by East Dulwich station, a bold piece of street art highlighting what the area has to offer, I can’t help feel a pang of regret.
We moved to the scruffy edge of the Cotswolds to be nearer to my family but also because we couldn’t afford the sort of house we’d want toI’d been living there for around 10 years by then in various. After renting in Islington and Clapham we scraped enough together to buy a flat in between Herne Hill and Dulwich, which seemed quite suburban in comparison.
However, having grown up in rural Warwickshire, I’d always imagined we would one day move back near to the area. And when we compared the price of properties in Dulwich back then versus what we could get for our money outside the M25, we decided to make the move., running two cars, council tax and so on.
We left around the same time as our friends bought a Victorian terrace in East Dulwich which they have since renovated and extended. While their joint income exceeds ours, I’d like to think we could have stretched the budget to afford a similar property .Our friends have grown to love the area and their children, who are around the same age as ours, clearly love it too.
