It looks like Northern Ireland’s long-awaited clean air strategy could be close to completion. But why is it so important, you ask?

So with people across the country now being warned ‘one in two of us’ will get cancer in our lifetimes, tackling issues like air pollution are no brainer and will go some way to reducing the millions spent on treatment. Prevention is better than cure, after all. Joseph Carter, Chair of Healthy Air NI and Head of Asthma + Lung UK NI says it’s a “positive step to protect the health of future generations in Northern Ireland”.

I hope this strategy won’t leave gaping holes in what needs to be done, like strategies for so many other things before it. I also hope it can be the start of a new Northern Ireland that puts the health and safety of its people before business interests. For officials to really make a difference with this strategy, they need to start testing for all harmful pollutants at all monitoring stations.
