They have given the green light for a huge oil terminal to allow Go Petrol Station owners, LCC Group, to bring huge amounts of oil and gas into the country

How on God’s green Earth can the department that oversees planning in this wee place sit on their hands and let one council decide huge fossil fuel projects that lock us into climate-burning fossil fuels for decades more.United Nations boss Antonio Guterres can’t be any more clear in his repeated warnings about the impact of fossil fuels.Global weather experts revealed just this week how summer 2023 was the hottest ever recorded by humans.

Yet here, in Northern Ireland, Stormont has sat on its hands and let Mid and East Antrim Borough Council fire on with projects that could see seven huge caverns mined under supposedly protect Larne Lough to store gas. But for me it’s sowed the seeds of doubt around their guardianship of such landscape altering decisions.

For the life of me, though, I just can’t understand why civil servants would sit back and let them happen considering their jobs for years to come, and will be finding ways we can drive down emissions across all sectors.I can just imagine the conversations in cement factories, on farms and industrial forecourts up and down the country if these projects go ahead.

While they allow themselves to be distracted by the greed of big oil - they’re not doing what needs to be done. No more tinkering around the edges. That won’t deliver the results we need to stop the world burning and starving, or both.Make it clear to business that we’re done with fossils, stop supporting climate harming fuels and give us the future we all deserve.Have you ever heard of conservation grazing? Cows and sheep often get a bad rap for chewing down habitats across this island and stopping new growth in areas that could otherwise be hiving with nature.
