Even then, it was obvious to anyone who stopped to think about it that closing schools for a total of six months – however justified it was on public health grounds – was going to have a hugely detrimental effect on learning and development. There is also another shadow cast over the prospects of this country’s children, of course, one that wasn’t inevitable. This was the shameful decision of the Boris Johnson government to refuse to fund the education catch-up programme that it itself had commissioned. Instead of the recommended £15bn to be set aside for this programme of work ,
The first thing to do is to recognise the scale of the challenge. Covid was a once-in-a-generation event, and so too must be our approach to fixing the educational legacy. There are no easy levers for politicians, or anyone else for that matter, to pull. Similarly, in too many schools the offer to students has become, thanks to both accountability and funding, more and more focused on the core curriculum at the expense of the richness of extracurricular activities: arts and music and drama. This will need to be rebuilt, alongside wider efforts to bring down the barriers between families and schools.
