The flattening of the major structure is promised to be 'managed and controlled' to protect the environment

Developers behind plans to demolish Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station say the flattening of the major structure will be "managed and controlled" to protect the environment. The company behind HS2 has also told Uniper, the site's operator, that it will have to "closely" follow announcements on HS2's future given that some of the Ratcliffe site was earmarked for the rail project.

Uniper has now submitted planning documents asking Rushcliffe Borough Council to decide whether or not the demolition project needs an environmental impact assessment. Developers argue not, saying: "The proposed development will be managed and controlled, consistent with other owned power station demolition projects successfully consented and/or demolished in England.

One of the branches would have travelled to the East Midlands Parkway station, which neighbours Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station, but this leg of the project was cancelled by Rishi Sunak. Despite that, HS2 Ltd says: "Whilst we have no specific observations to make, the applicant is advised that part of the application site falls within land that is currently safeguarded for construction and/or operation of HS2 Phase 2b.
