The exciting projects heading for Rossendale in 2023 including market hall revamps and Trickett's arcade plans
Rossendale town centres, along with indoor and outdoor leisure and culture attractions, have been the focus of attention recently, including some big government funding bids. And these projects will evolve during 2023.
Regarding the future of towns, Haslingden and Waterfoot are among a number of Rossendale locations earmarked for cash from the government’s new UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Rossendale’s overall £2.6million allocation from Westminster was very recently confirmed in December. The programme is designed to replace old European Union funding schemes which ended with Brexit.
Rossendale Council developed the bid through a local Levelling-Up Board with the council’s Labour leader and Conservative opposition group leader, plus local MP Jake Berry and others. Mr Berry left the government’s cabinet in the autumn of 2022, following former prime minister Liz Truss’s departure. At Waterfoot, £300,000 is earmarked to explore options for the future use of Trickett’s Arcade. The inside has been vacant for years and there are a number of vacant shop units outside. The outside needs building repairs too. The arcade’s restoration would help boost wider business life in Waterfoot, the borough council believes.
In some parts of the north-west, gym and leisure centre staff are increasingly involved in NHS programmes for people referred for help with a range of needs, from weight loss to preparing or recovering from hospital surgery or therapies for cancer, for example. Increased NHS and leisure service co-operation is under-way in Greater Manchester. Meanwhile, Burnley leisure centres provide various health and well-being services for people referred by GPs or schools, for example.
