'Canal bosses wanted to show the world that Manchester wasn't just a dirty old town but a place to do business'
This striking 1931 poster is one of series of Manchester Ship Canal adverts going on display later this month
But for the first 30 years or so the privately-owned waterway struggled to turn a profit. And just when business started to pick up, along came the First World War - stopping everything in its tracks. They included Hugh Taylor, who went on to design a series of celebrated publicity posters for the London Underground. The ad campaign came at a time when Manchester and Lancashire was losing its place as the industrial powerhouse of the England, as London and the south east began it rise to prominence.
"They had to state their distinctive position of being in the centre of Lancashire and the north midlands. But by the 1920s there was this drift of manufacturing moving south.
