The Blackpool Aviation Week, Britain's first official air show, took place in 1909Air show. Large crowds are expected to flock to Blackpool Promenade for two days of acrobatic aerial displays on Saturday August 10 and Sunday August 11. From 1903 to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the development of aeroplanes alongside balloons and kites for private, sport and military use was known as the Pioneer Era for aviation. Land used for a golf course two miles south of Blackpool was leased and converted for use with the building of hangars, grandstands and a clubhouse. The event was held over eight days, from October 18 to the 25th, and is reported to have attracted around 60,000 spectators on its opening day.
High winds and bad weather towards the end of the week saw flights cancelled, not helped by the makeshift airfield being located only a couple of hundred meters from the Irish Sea. It should also be noted that an air show was held in Doncaster a few days before but was not officially recognised by the Aero Club of Great Britain.
