Part 6: HOT ROD's 40th anniversary coverage from the January 1988 issue looked at trends on the horizon and had designers share their points of view.Reviewing the past 40 years of hot rodding's history naturally leads us into the next century, and the temptation to predict the future of our sport beyond 1999.
Thinking in terms of nostalgia—a concept closely associated with hot rodding—most rodders, as they become established in life, are motivated by the desire to finally buy the car they couldn't afford when they were younger. By the year 2000, the affordable will become the entry-level hot rods of the 25-to 35-year-old rodders who are in school today, dreaming about them and reading HOT ROD on their laps in chemistry class.
While the roadsters and coupes of the '30s have reached a level of sophistication that's difficult to top, it seems likely that the fat-fendered trend will be carried well beyond the turn of the century. Also, as the production cars we drive today become more fun, comfortable, safe, and fast, we'll want to incorporate those features in our hot rods.
Charlie Smith thinks that the future of street machines calls for revised oddball body styles mounted on modified stock chassis or all-new platforms with high-tech, active suspensions. His observation that the '50-'51 Studebaker "was going the wrong way" led him to design this reversed ex-four-door Stude' with transverse, mid-mounted V6 power and 17-inch composite wheels.
Top Fuel cars may begin to resemble the Bonneville liners as they meet similar aerodynamic forces at speeds over 300 mph. Burke Lesage of the SCTA doesn't foresee many changes in Land Speed Record racing and doesn't believe that heavily sponsored entries will spoil the little guys' fun. In the performance department, however, Burke talks about 400-mph average speeds to be reached again within three years.
