Families lived in fear and police had little to go on except that the suspect carried a knife.

James Ferguson’s reign of terror began in October 1967 with a terrifying assault on a girl in St George's Cross in the city’s West End.The monster took his victims into basements or hid them in dustbins until he could find a spot to carry out his sexual assaults.

He was also carrying a knife at the time of his arrest - similar to one that was used on his vulnerable young victims. In 2007 even his family warned he must never be released after Ferguson applied to be moved from Carstairs."The whole thought of him trying to get out has me terrified. If it ever did happen no child would be safe."How can the authorities even think, even contemplate, a move for him?Ferguson had applied to be moved to a less secure unit, but his application was turned down.

"I said, 'what are you going to do to me?' He said, 'I've got a knife', and I said 'are you going to kill me?'Thankfully another young girl ran into the close, putting a stop to the attack.
